| Building a Cob Oven in the Southern Highlands |
Here it is! Our brand new wood-fired pizza oven made with recycled materials. Built over five weekends by pizza chef and builder, Manuel Alves with the voluntary help of seven community
members (Smiffy, Jim, Carlyle, Norbert, Nick, Greg and Brad) between October and December, 2010, we have now had two firings and two "how to make pizza" sessions followed by feasts.
It was built through funding from the NSW Environmental Education Trust plus some generous goodwill from Manuel and labour supplied by our workshop volunteers. Our regular community garden members (Kathi , Paul, Annie, Arthur, Joy and Natalie) also contributed in the building of the oven shelter and slab as well as catering on the days of the workshops. Thanks to all who made possible the creation of this wonderful garden asset.
Up until now, the community garden has only had an open fire and a gas BBQ (no on-site electricity) to cook our meals and provide catering for events but we intend to use our new wood-fired oven to cook everything from pizzas to roasts and apple crumble at every available opportunity. And we will be feeling quite smug that we are creating a lot less pollution because the oven design allows a secondary burn of smoke particles before they exit the chimney.
Watch this space for the next event when we will be firing the oven and cooking organic, in-season veges from our garden beds just an arm's length away!
